Engineering Statics by Hand: Force Vectors, Moments, Free-Body Equilibrium, Support Reactions, Trusses by Joints and Sections, Centroids, Second Moments of Area & Friction
Make every force balance before anything moves. You will resolve forces into components, add them into a resultant, compute moments, solve free-body diagrams for cable tensions and support reactions, find every member force of a truss by joints and by sections, locate centroids of composite shapes, apply the parallel-axis theorem and decide between sliding and tipping, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Resolve four cable forces on a lifting ring into x and y components, add them into a resultant, compute its magnitude and find its direction with ATAN and a quadrant correction.
- Compute the moment of four forces about the base point O of a sign gantry, add a couple, move the resultant to a second point and locate its line of action.
- Set up ΣFx = 0 and ΣFy = 0 for a ring held by two cables and a guide line, solve the 2 × 2 system with Cramer's rule written out and compare the tensions with a fictional rating.
- Set up the free-body equations of an L-frame bracket on a pin and an inclined roller, solve the moment equation first, get the pin reactions from the force sums and check that every sum is zero.
- Compute member angles from joint coordinates, solve a roof truss joint by joint – A first, then B – and read which members are in tension, in compression or carry no force.
- Cut a toy footbridge truss through three members, find each force with one equation, compare the results with a joint-by-joint table and name the most loaded member.
- Locate the centroids of a T-section with a slot and of a U-channel with SUMPRODUCT and compute their second moments of area about the horizontal centroidal axis with the parallel-axis theorem.
- Compare the push that makes a crate slide with the push that tips it, then check three load cases on the footbridge truss: the largest member force per case, its use of a fictional allowable force and a chart.
About this course
Before anything is built, every force on it has to cancel out. This beginner course practises that on toy structures you can follow line by line. You split cable forces on a lifting ring into components and combine them into one resultant with the correct direction. Turning effects about a point are added up for a sign gantry, and a ring on two cables becomes a small system solved with determinants. An L-shaped bracket gives its support reactions, a roof truss and a footbridge reveal which members pull and which push, and composite cross-sections yield their centres and bending stiffness. The finale weighs sliding against tipping and three load cases against a fictional allowable force.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
