Vectors & 3D Geometry in Spreadsheets: Dot & Cross Products, Planes & Projections

Build 3D vectors from points, measure lengths and unit vectors, add and scale displacements and chart a route, find angles with the dot product, project forces and compute work, take cross products for areas, build a plane from three points and measure distances to it, find the closest approach of two drones and finish with torque and cosine shading: 8 graded labs with SUMPRODUCT, SUMSQ, ACOS and plain component formulas.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn pairs of points in Kestrel Robotics' warehouse into vectors, measure their length, scale them to unit vectors and move a drone 4 m along one of them.
  • Build the route of a Kestrel warehouse robot from scaled base moves, add the legs head to tail to get its positions, measure how far it ends from the start and plot the route from above.
  • Compute dot products of six vector pairs from a Kestrel robot cell, turn them into the angle between the vectors with ACOS and DEGREES, and classify each angle as acute, right or obtuse.
  • Calculate the work done by five forces with the dot product, the part of each force that acts along the motion, and split one force into its parallel and perpendicular parts.
  • Compute the cross product of the two edges of five triangular shade sails with the component formula, take its length as the parallelogram area and order the sail fabric for the triangles.
  • Build the equation of a sloped warehouse roof from three surveyed corners, find its tilt, and measure how far an antenna, a drone and other points are from the roof plane.
  • Write two drone flight paths as parametric lines, tabulate their positions and separation over time, and find the exact time and distance of their closest approach.
  • Compute the torque of a force on a robot wrist with the cross product, then shade the six faces of a 3D building model with Lambert's cosine law and chart how bright each face is.

About this course

Vectors describe forces, motion and surfaces, and they become intuitive once you calculate with them. This course works in three dimensions throughout. You compute components, lengths and unit vectors, add vectors and scale them to plot a robot's route. The dot product gives the angle between vectors and leads to projections and work done by a force. The cross product produces areas of parallelograms and triangles. You build a plane from three points and measure a point's distance to it, describe lines parametrically and find the closest approach of two moving drones. Applications include torque and cosine shading with surface normals. For maths, physics, engineering and graphics students.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
