Statistics for Lab Sciences: Calibration, Uncertainty & QC
Analyse real-world style lab data hands-on: replicates and %RSD, outlier tests, calibration curves with LINEST, unknowns with their uncertainty, LOD/LOQ, uncertainty budgets, Westgard control charts and method comparison, every cell checked live. Statistics only, no lab procedures.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Summarise six replicate nitrate results for four samples with the mean, the sample standard deviation and the %RSD, and check whether the QC standard's certified value lies inside the 95% confidence interval.
- Test whether one suspicious result among ten replicates may be rejected: you calculate Grubbs' G and its critical value from the t distribution, make the decision with IF and cross-check with Dixon's Q.
- Fit the straight-line calibration of the nitrate method from seven standards, check R² against the acceptance limit, look at the residuals and draw the curve as a scatter chart with a trendline.
- Turn the mean signal of four samples into concentrations with the calibration line, estimate the standard error of each result with the textbook formula, build a 95% interval and decide whether a sample is above the action level.
- Estimate the limits of detection and quantitation of the nitrate method in two ways (residual SD of a low-level curve and SD of blanks) and label four low results as ND, DNQ or a reportable value.
- Build a small uncertainty budget for the lab's 100 mg/L nitrate stock standard: standard uncertainties from certificates and tolerances, the sum rule for a mass by difference, the product rule for the concentration and the expanded uncertainty with k = 2.
- Put 20 runs of the QC check standard on a Levey-Jennings chart with mean ± 2s and ± 3s lines, turn every result into a z score and let formulas flag the Westgard rules 1-3s, 2-2s and 4-1s.
- Compare a field test kit with the lab method on ten shared samples: differences, the paired t statistic, the p-value with T.TEST and a conclusion, and you see why an unpaired test would miss the bias.
About this course
Every result that leaves a laboratory rests on a few statistical steps. This course lets you practise each of them on realistic measurement data. You summarise replicates with mean, standard deviation and relative standard deviation, then test suspect values with Grubbs and Dixon's Q. A calibration curve built with SLOPE, INTERCEPT, LINEST and R-squared converts unknown signals into concentrations with their uncertainty. You calculate limits of detection and quantitation from the curve, propagate uncertainty through sums and products and set up Levey-Jennings control charts with Westgard rules. The final lab compares two analytical methods with a paired t-test. Suitable for chemistry and biology students, lab technicians and quality control staff.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
