What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a list of cities and nights into check-in and check-out dates, a night-by-night calendar and a count of the weekend nights that cost more.
  • Convert twelve expenses in euros, forints, złoty and koruna into the home currency with a rate table, total them, price the card fees and sum one category.
  • Price the Budapest–Kraków leg four ways, split shared costs per person, cost the car from fuel use and fees and work out what the plane's saved hours really cost.
  • Turn four advertised nightly prices into the real total for four nights – rooms, cleaning, service fee and city tax – and compare them per person per night.
  • Track the trip budget day by day, compare what has been spent with the plan for the same days, work out the allowance for the remaining days and draw the burn-down chart.
  • Total what each friend paid, split every expense among the people who actually took part, and turn the two into net balances that show who owes and who gets money back.
  • Turn four net balances into a short list of payments – largest debtor pays largest creditor – update the balances round by round and check how much money changes hands.
  • Value six ways of redeeming Ana's credit-card points in cents per point, net of the taxes still paid in cash, find the best one and chart the ranking.

About this course

Group trips are fun until someone has to work out who owes what. This course helps you plan the whole journey and settle up fairly. You build an itinerary with nights per stop and check-in and check-out dates, track spending in several currencies with an exchange-rate table and card fees and compare plane, train, bus and car per person and per hour. Accommodation options are compared on total cost including fees and city tax. A daily burn-down shows planned versus actual spending and what remains per day. For groups, you record who paid, calculate fair shares and net balances and find the fewest payments to clear them. A final lab values loyalty points and miles.
