What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Price every line of a group tour, split the cost sheet into fixed group costs and per-person costs, and work out the full cost per traveller at the planned group size.
  • Build the cost-per-traveller curve for groups of 10 to 24, find the departure profit at each size, look up the smallest group that earns the minimum profit and check the break-even group with one formula.
  • Turn room rates into a room cost per traveller for twin, triple and single rooms, price each room type with the same markup, work out the single supplement and the revenue of a departure from its room list.
  • Cost land services paid in a fictional foreign currency with a buffer on the spot rate, find the margin per traveller and the exchange rate at which that margin disappears.
  • Price five tours with a markup and with a target margin, see why the two differ, round the margin price up to a brochure price point and check the margin that is really left.
  • Apply early-booking and last-minute discounts, deduct the travel agent's commission only where an agent sold the seat, and find the departure's net revenue and the average net revenue per seat.
  • Set the balance due date with EDATE, count the days before departure for six cancellations, look up the charge on a fictional cancellation scale and work out the charge, the amount already paid and the refund.
  • Decide which of eight departures run, calculate each departure's revenue, costs and profit, add up the season result including the cost of cancelled departures, and chart the bookings per departure.

About this course

A coach and a guide cost the same whether eight or thirty travellers book, which makes group pricing tricky. This course takes you through it with fictional trips. You split a cost sheet into fixed group costs and per-person costs, show per-person cost by group size and find the minimum viable group. Room-sharing labs set twin, triple and single prices and the single supplement. You cost foreign land services with a currency buffer and find the exchange rate where the margin disappears, then compare margin with markup and set brochure price points. Later labs cover early-booking offers, agent commission, deposits, balance dates and cancellation scales. The season P&L brings in fill rates and guaranteed or cancelled departures. For tour operators, travel planners and hospitality students.
