Markov Chains in Spreadsheets: Transition Matrices, Steady States & Board Games

Turn weather records into a transition matrix, raise it to powers with MMULT, solve the steady state with MINVERSE, use the fundamental matrix for absorbing chains, compute gambler's-ruin odds, build a snakes-and-ladders matrix from dice rolls, project brand market shares with a chart and compare a simulation with the exact answer: 8 graded labs.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a year of day-to-day weather counts into a transition matrix, check that every row sums to 1, multiply along a two-day path and estimate how long a rainy spell lasts.
  • Square the weather matrix three times to get 2-, 4- and 8-day probabilities, watch the rows become equal and push today's uncertain forecast four days ahead.
  • Push a sunny day 12 days forward until the probabilities stop changing, then solve the long-run distribution exactly with one MINVERSE and read the mean time between rainy days.
  • Split a student-progression chain into Q and R, build the fundamental matrix N = (I − Q)⁻¹, read the expected years until a student graduates or leaves and the probability of graduating from each year.
  • Calculate, for every starting bankroll from 0 to 10, the chance to reach the target before ruin, the expected number of rounds and the expected net result in a slightly unfair game.
  • Build the transition matrix of a small snakes-and-ladders board from the six die rolls, then compute the expected number of rolls to finish and the chance to finish within eight rolls.
  • Project four brands' market shares month by month from a switching matrix, solve the long-run shares, value the long-run gain for one brand and chart the shares converging.
  • Simulate 80 days of weather from given random numbers with the inverse-transform trick, count the simulated shares and compare them with the exact steady state in a table and a chart.

About this course

Markov chains model anything that moves between states with fixed probabilities, from the weather to a board game. This course teaches them through playful but rigorous examples. You estimate a transition matrix from weather records and raise it to higher powers with MMULT to get multi-step probabilities. The steady state is found by iteration and then exactly with MINVERSE. Absorbing chains introduce the fundamental matrix, expected steps and absorption probabilities, which you apply to the gambler's ruin and to a snakes-and-ladders board to find the expected game length. Brand switching shows how market shares settle over time, and a final lab compares a simulation with the exact steady state. For maths, statistics and business students.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
