Optics & Light Calculations: Refraction, Lenses, Mirrors & Photometry

Calculate light the way optics labs do: speed of light and refractive index, Snell's law with ASIN and the critical angle for total internal reflection, the thin lens equation with real and virtual images, dioptres and lens combinations (with the idea behind glasses), concave and convex mirrors, lumens, candela, lux and the inverse-square law, LED lighting design with the lumen method, and photon energy E = hc/λ with a chart – 8 labs at one fictional optics workshop, every cell checked instantly. Educational only, not eye-care or engineering advice.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn refractive indices into the speed of light and the wavelength inside eight materials, then identify an unknown sample from its measured speed.
  • Apply Snell's law with SIN, ASIN, RADIANS and DEGREES to nine rays, flag total internal reflection and find the critical angle of each boundary.
  • Solve the thin lens equation for eight setups, from a camera to a projector and a magnifier, read magnification and image type, and size a projected slide.
  • Convert focal lengths to dioptres, combine lenses in contact and with a gap, and estimate the lens power that would correct a far point or help with reading (educational model).
  • Find focal lengths, image distances and magnifications for six real-world mirrors, then design the curvature of a make-up mirror for a wanted magnification.
  • Convert a bulb's lumens into candela, calculate the illuminance in lux at seven distances, find how close a reader must sit for 300 lux and chart the inverse-square curve.
  • Size the LED lighting of a small office with the lumen method: lumens needed per room, whole fixtures, the illuminance you actually get and the lighting power density.
  • Turn nine wavelengths from UV to infrared into frequency, photon energy in electronvolts and photons per second, then chart energy against wavelength.

About this course

Optics connects everyday objects, from glasses and car mirrors to office lighting, through a small set of equations. This course lets you apply them. You calculate the speed of light in materials from the refractive index, use Snell's law to find refraction angles and the critical angle for total internal reflection. The thin lens equation gives image distance, magnification and whether an image is real or virtual, and optical power in dioptres explains lens combinations and the idea behind a spectacle prescription. Curved mirror labs cover concave and convex examples. Photometry relates lumens, candela and lux with the inverse-square law, leading to an LED lighting layout, and the last lab links wavelength, frequency and photon energy. For physics students and technicians.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
