What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Build the light-year and the parsec from exact IAU constants and convert six real distances from light-years to parsecs.
- Test T² = a³ on the eight planets, measure the exponent 1.5 with SLOPE on logarithms and plot the log-log line.
- Calculate escape and low-orbit speeds for six worlds, Earth's speed around the Sun and the Sun's mass from Earth's orbit.
- Turn measured parallaxes into distances in parsecs and light-years, count the stars within 6 pc and find the farthest one.
- Compute distance moduli and absolute magnitudes, compare stars with the Sun and use a standard candle to measure a distance.
- Compute the Sun's power output from its size and temperature, the sunlight each planet receives and where other stars would warm a planet like the Sun warms Earth.
- Find where each star's light peaks, label the band, assign the spectral class and colour with a lookup and work backwards from a peak to a temperature.
- Fit the Hubble constant to ten galaxies with SLOPE, turn it into the Hubble time, measure a distance from a redshift and draw the Hubble diagram.
About this course
How far away is a star, how hot is it and how fast does a planet move? You answer these questions with straightforward calculations. After converting between astronomical units, light-years and parsecs, you apply Kepler's third law and check it on a log-log plot. Orbital speed and escape velocity lead to estimating the mass of the Sun. You find distances to nearby stars from parallax, connect apparent and absolute magnitude through the distance modulus, and use the inverse-square law for luminosity. Wien's law links a star's peak wavelength to temperature, colour and spectral class, and a final fit of Hubble's law gives an age scale for the universe. For students, teachers and amateur astronomers.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
