Exoplanet Math: Transit Depth, Orbits, Habitable Zones & Radial Velocity

Find and characterise planets around other stars in a spreadsheet: transit depth to planet radius, period and ephemeris from repeated dips, Kepler's third law, equilibrium temperature, habitable-zone edges, minimum mass from radial velocity, density and composition hints, and a catalogue chart, every cell checked as you go. Educational, simplified and fictional data, not affiliated with any space agency.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Measure the baseline and the dip of a transit light curve, turn the depth into the radius ratio and the planet's radius in Earth radii, and plot the light curve.
  • Number six observed transits (two were missed), fit the orbital period with SLOPE, predict a future transit and measure the average transit duration.
  • Convert six periods to years, get each semi-major axis from the star's mass, the orbital speed in km/s, and check one orbit with Newton's form in SI units.
  • Calculate the equilibrium temperature of six planets in kelvin and °C, count the ones in a temperate band and solve for the albedo that would give a target temperature.
  • Calculate six stars' luminosities, the inner and outer edges of their habitable zones and test with IF and AND whether each planet lies inside.
  • Read the semi-amplitude K off twelve radial-velocity measurements, turn it into the planet's minimum mass in kg and Earth masses, and correct it with the inclination from the transit.
  • Combine mass (radial velocity) and radius (transit) of seven planets into bulk density, surface gravity and escape velocity, and look up a composition hint.
  • Classify twelve planets by size with an approximate lookup, count a class, average the radius of the short-period planets and plot radius against period.

About this course

Thousands of planets around other stars were found with a few equations you can work through yourself. From a light curve you turn the transit depth into the planet's radius, then use repeated dips to find the orbital period, predict future transits and estimate transit duration. Kepler's third law gives orbit size from period and stellar mass, and the equilibrium temperature follows from the star, distance and albedo. You set habitable zone boundaries from stellar luminosity, convert a radial velocity semi-amplitude into a minimum planet mass, and combine mass and radius into density to judge whether a planet is rocky, watery or gaseous. A catalogue lab sorts planets into size classes and charts radius against period. For astronomy students, teachers and enthusiasts.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
