Map & Compass Navigation: Scales, Grid References, Bearings, Declination & Slopes
Measure, convert and correct everything a paper map gives you on a fictional orienteering map: scales and areas, grid references, bearings from coordinates, true, grid and magnetic north, slopes from contours, pace counting, error cones and a navigation log, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert map centimetres to ground kilometres and back for four different scales, turn a map area into square kilometres and work out the scale of an unknown map.
- Split 6- and 8-figure grid references into eastings and northings in metres with LEFT and MID, build a reference back from GPS metres with INT and TEXT, and measure the straight-line distance between two points.
- Calculate the grid bearing of every leg of a night course from coordinates with ATAN2, keep it between 0 and 360° with MOD, add the back bearings and the leg and course lengths.
- Update a fictional declination to the year of the hike, convert map bearings to compass bearings and back with the grid–magnetic angle, and keep every result between 0 and 360°.
- Turn contour counts and map millimetres into height differences, horizontal distances, slope percentages and angles, name the steepest leg and colour the legs that break the school's fictional slope mark.
- Turn counted paces into metres with a calibration and a terrain factor, split each leg into east and north parts with SIN and COS, and find the final position and the distance back to the start.
- Turn a bearing error into metres off course with TAN, compare the error cone with the width of each target, decide where to aim off, and calculate the aim-off angle and the number of legs that need it.
- Build a complete navigation log for a fictional score event: leg distances, grid and magnetic bearings, leg times with a pace rule, arrival times and a position plot of the whole course.
About this course
Map and compass navigation relies on a few calculations that are easy to practise and costly to get wrong. This course builds them into habits. You convert between map centimetres, ground kilometres and areas at different scales, and translate six- and eight-figure grid references into metres. Bearings are calculated from coordinates, and you convert between true, grid and magnetic north with a declination that changes by year. Contour labs give height differences, slope percentage and slope angle. You practise dead reckoning on foot with pace counting and legs, see how a few degrees of error grow with distance and use aiming off deliberately. The capstone keeps a navigation log with a position plot. For hikers, orienteers and outdoor leaders.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
