Land Surveying by the Numbers: Angles & Bearings, Distance Reductions, Closed Traverses, Misclosure & the Bowditch Adjustment, Coordinates, Levelling Runs & Setting Out

Turn field-book readings into checked coordinates and heights. You will convert and balance angles, carry bearings around a traverse, reduce slope distances, compute latitudes and departures, judge the misclosure, adjust it with the Bowditch rule, reduce a levelling run two ways and prepare a setting-out table, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Convert five observed interior angles from degrees-minutes-seconds into decimal degrees, compare their sum with (n − 2) × 180°, spread the angular misclosure equally over the stations and write the adjusted angles back as D-MM-SS text.
  • Carry the start azimuth of leg A–B round the traverse with the adjusted interior angles and MOD 360, prove that it closes on itself, add the back azimuths and turn every azimuth into a quadrant bearing such as N 26.9919 W.
  • Average three slope readings per leg and judge their spread, reduce the mean slope distance to the horizontal with the vertical angle, look up a temperature correction in ppm from a fictional card and apply it together with a fictional scale factor.
  • Split every leg into its latitude ΔN and departure ΔE, add them up, turn the leftovers into the linear misclosure, express it as a precision 1 : x and classify the traverse with a fictional accuracy table.
  • Distribute the leftover ΣΔN and ΣΔE over the five legs in proportion to their lengths, adjust every latitude and departure so that both sums close to zero, and find the leg that takes the largest correction.
  • Build coordinates for all stations from the start point and the adjusted ΔE/ΔN, close back on A, compute join distances and bearings between points with ATAN plus a quadrant correction (including a due-west join where ΔN = 0) and fix three detail points by radiation.
  • Reduce a fictional levelling run from BM1 to BM2 twice – by rise and fall and by height of collimation – run the arithmetic checks, compare the misclosure with a fictional allowance k × √km and distribute it over the set-ups.
  • Compute the parcel area from the adjusted coordinates, prepare a setting-out table from station D with backsight to E – bearing, distance and the clockwise angle to turn for four design points – and plot the closed traverse as an XY scatter chart.

About this course

This course turns a fictional field book into checked coordinates and heights. You convert DMS angles to decimal degrees, find the angular misclosure and balance the interior angles of a closed traverse. You carry azimuths round the loop with MOD, add back and quadrant bearings, reduce repeated slope readings to horizontal distances and apply a temperature correction in ppm and a scale factor. You compute latitudes and departures, the linear misclosure and the precision 1 : x, adjust the traverse with the Bowditch rule and build coordinates, joins and radiated detail points. A levelling run is reduced by rise and fall and by height of collimation, and the capstone delivers the parcel area, a setting-out table and an XY plot.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
