Flight Planning Math for Student Pilots: Wind Triangle, Fuel & Weight-and-Balance

Practise the arithmetic of pilot knowledge tests in a spreadsheet: unit conversions, TAS from IAS, the wind triangle with ASIN and COS, leg times and ETAs, fuel and reserves, weight & balance with an envelope chart and density altitude. Educational exam practice only, not for real flight planning; fictional aircraft data, no FAA/EASA affiliation.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Convert the numbers of a practice cross-country trip between nautical miles and kilometres, knots and km/h, feet and metres, kilograms and pounds, and gallons of fuel into pounds.
  • Estimate true airspeed at five cruising altitudes from the indicated airspeed, see the gain in knots and work backwards to the indicated speed that gives a target TAS.
  • For five practice legs you calculate the wind correction angle with ASIN, the true heading wrapped to 0–360° with MOD, the groundspeed with COS, and one leg's headwind component.
  • Turn distance and groundspeed into minutes per leg, a running total, an ETA for every checkpoint and the trip's average groundspeed.
  • Add up taxi, climb and cruise fuel, pick a day or night VFR reserve with IF, total the fuel required and check the margin to the usable fuel on board.
  • Load the fictional Skylark SK-4, calculate each station's moment, the total weight and the centre of gravity, and check them against the weight limit and the CG envelope.
  • For five fictional airfields you calculate pressure altitude from the altimeter setting, the standard (ISA) temperature, the density altitude with the 120 ft per °C rule, and find the field with the worst performance.
  • Finish the practice flight log: fuel left at landing, weight, moment and CG at zero fuel, takeoff and landing, and plot all three inside the SK-4 CG envelope as a scatter chart.

About this course

Student pilots spend a lot of ground-school time on calculations that a flight computer or app would otherwise hide. This course lets you practise them until they are second nature. You convert between knots, nautical miles, feet, pounds and gallons and estimate true airspeed from indicated airspeed with a rule of thumb. The wind triangle gives wind correction angle, heading and groundspeed, and leg tables produce cumulative times and ETAs. Fuel labs plan burn by phase with day and night reserves. Weight and balance work covers moments, centre of gravity and the envelope check, and pressure and density altitude rules highlight hot-and-high risks. A flight log compares takeoff and landing CG. For training only, never for actual flight planning.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
