Soil Science & Irrigation Calculations for Agronomy
Soil texture classes, bulk density and porosity, available water in the root zone, crop water need with ET0 × Kc, a daily irrigation schedule, fertiliser rates from the N-P-K grade, lime from pH and drip vs sprinkler costs: 8 graded labs on one fictional farm.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Check ten soil samples, classify their texture with an IFS rule set, look up the typical available water capacity of each class and measure how many samples are clay-rich.
- Turn eight ring-core samples into bulk density, porosity and volumetric water content, then convert the bulk density into tonnes of soil per hectare.
- Add up the plant-available water of a layered profile down to the rooting depth of maize, then find how much the crop can use before stress and how many days that lasts.
- Turn monthly reference evapotranspiration into the water use of a maize crop, subtract effective rain and size the season's gross irrigation volume.
- Run a 14-day root-zone water balance for the maize field, flag the days on which the depletion passes RAW, count the stress days of the farm's actual plan and chart the depletion against the limit.
- Convert nitrogen targets into kg of product per hectare, total tonnage and whole bags for five fields, then build a DAP + urea + potash programme that credits the N already in the DAP.
- Read the lime need of six fields from a pH × texture table with INDEX/MATCH, correct it for the product's neutralising value and price the whole liming job.
- Compare three irrigation systems for the 24 ha maize field: pumped volume, pumping energy, the annual cost split into water, energy and capital, and a stacked column chart of the result.
About this course
Knowing when and how much to irrigate starts with the soil itself. In this course you classify texture from sand, silt and clay fractions, calculate bulk density, porosity and water content from core samples, and derive total and readily available water in the root zone. Crop water demand comes from reference evapotranspiration and a crop coefficient, giving the net irrigation requirement. A daily soil water balance schedules irrigation events on a chart. You convert an N-P-K analysis into fertiliser rates, read a lime requirement from soil pH in a two-way lookup and compare drip, sprinkler and furrow systems on efficiency, energy and water cost. For agronomy students, farm advisers and growers who like to check the numbers.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
