What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn five rain-gauge readings into one catchment rainfall, first as a plain average, then with Thiessen polygon weights, and convert it into a water volume.
- Size the design flood of a small urban catchment: a composite runoff coefficient, the Kirpich time of concentration, the intensity from an IDF curve and the peak flow in m³/s.
- Build a composite curve number, the retention S and initial abstraction Ia, then compute runoff depth and volume for six storms with the SCS-CN equation.
- Convolve a 3-hour excess-rain hyetograph with a 1-hour unit hydrograph in a step table, add baseflow and check the mass balance of the runoff volume.
- Run a monthly water balance for the Fernbrook Reservoir in a dry year: evaporation volumes, end-of-month storage, months below the minimum operating level and a storage chart.
- Rank three years of monthly flows, compute the exceedance probability of each, plot the flow duration curve and read the Q95 low flow.
- Project the town's population to 2046, turn it into daily demand, add non-revenue water and a peak-day factor, and find the year the treatment plant runs out of capacity.
- Compare five pipe diameters for a new 1.8 km main: cross-section area, flow velocity, Hazen-Williams friction loss, and the smallest pipe that meets the head-loss limit.
About this course
Hydrology turns rainfall records into design flows and water supply plans, and this course lets you do it step by step. You average catchment rainfall by arithmetic mean and Thiessen weights, estimate peak flow with the rational method and careful unit conversions, and find runoff depth with the SCS curve number. Excess rainfall is convolved with a unit hydrograph into a flood hydrograph. A reservoir water balance tracks inflow, release, evaporation and storage, and a flow duration curve gives exceedance probabilities and Q95. You forecast water demand from population, per-capita use and losses, and finish with pipe flow and Hazen-Williams head loss. For civil and environmental engineering students and junior water engineers.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
