What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Calculate the flow and nozzle reaction of seven smooth-bore tips with the classic 29.7 formula and work backwards to the nozzle pressure that gives a target flow.
- Work out how much six fixed-gallonage fog nozzles really flow when the nozzle pressure is off, estimate their reaction and flag the nozzles that fall below 90 % of their rated flow.
- Look up the friction loss coefficient for seven hose lays, calculate the friction loss of each, build the loss curve of a 1¾ in line and chart how fast it climbs with flow.
- Calculate the elevation pressure for six hillside, aerial and basement situations, apply the 5 psi per floor rule in a building and compare it with the exact 0.434 psi per foot.
- Calculate friction loss and pump discharge pressure for four single lines with elevation, then for a wyed layout where the supply line carries the flow of both branches.
- Calculate the flow of a master stream tip, split it over one, two or three supply lines, and compare the friction loss and pump pressure of five layouts.
- Calculate the pump discharge pressure for supporting a standpipe from the fire department connection (FDC) for five fire floors and flag the floors where it would exceed the pre-plan maximum.
- Calculate the discharge pressure of four lines flowing at once, find the pressure the pump must make, check total flow against the pump's capacity at that pressure and chart the line pressures.
About this course
Pump operators have to get pressure right quickly, and that takes practised calculations. This course drills them with immediate feedback. You calculate smooth-bore nozzle flow from tip diameter and nozzle pressure, then compare rated and actual fog nozzle flows and nozzle reaction. Friction loss is computed for different hose sizes with coefficients from a lookup, and elevation gain and loss are added per foot and per floor. You determine pump discharge pressure for single and wyed lines, see how siamese and parallel lines split flow to reduce friction loss, and calculate pressure for pumping into a standpipe connection. A multi-line pump chart with a maximum flow check closes the course. For firefighters, driver-operator candidates and fire science students; follow your department's procedures.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
