Tides & Ocean Math: Harmonic Constituents, Tide Tables & Wave Calculations
Model a tide as cosine constituents, beat M2 against S2 into springs and neaps, read high and low water, test the rule of twelfths, interpolate tidal streams, size a tidal prism, compute wave speed by depth, wave energy and power, and fit a sea-level trend: 8 graded labs with illustrative data, not for navigation.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- For the fictional harbour of Port Halden you turn the M2 period into an angular speed, model 24 hours of water level with a cosine and find the time of the first high water.
- Add the solar S2 tide to M2, calculate the spring-neap period, compute the tidal range for 16 days and chart the spring-neap cycle.
- From 25 hourly modelled heights you read the highest and lowest water, the time of high water and how many hours boats can cross the marina sill.
- Estimate the rising tide hour by hour with the sailors' rule of twelfths, compare it with a cosine model of the same tide and measure the largest gap.
- Calculate today's tidal range, interpolate the maximum tidal stream between neaps and springs and estimate the tidal prism and mean current through a lagoon inlet.
- For eight swells you calculate the deep-water wavelength and speed, the wavelength and speed at the local depth and classify each wave as deep, intermediate or shallow.
- For six sea states you calculate the wave energy per square metre and the wave power per metre of crest, then the time-weighted mean power and the annual energy resource of a stretch of coast.
- From 30 years of annual mean sea level at a fictional tide gauge you calculate the linear trend in mm per year and cm per century, chart it with a trendline and extend the line to 2050.
About this course
Tides look complicated, yet a few cosine waves reproduce them remarkably well. This course shows how. You model the main lunar constituent as a single cosine, add the solar one to produce spring and neap cycles, and read times and heights of high and low water from the resulting curve. The rule of twelfths is compared with the cosine model. You calculate tidal range, tidal streams and the tidal prism of an estuary, then move to waves: speed in deep and shallow water, wave height, energy and power per metre of crest. A final lab fits a sea-level trend to annual means in millimetres per year. For oceanography and geography students, sailors and coastal engineers; not for navigation.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
