Value an option grant with Black-Scholes, spread cliff and graded awards, handle forfeitures, RSUs, options and performance shares with market and non-market conditions, account for a repricing, post the journal entries, apply the treasury stock method to diluted EPS and chart the ESPP and total expense: 8 labs on one fictional company (educational).

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Read the terms of Lumen Robotics' 2026 option grant, estimate the expected term and value one option at the grant date with the Black-Scholes-Merton formula and NORM.S.DIST.
  • Spread an RSU award that vests 25 % per year over four years, once tranche by tranche (graded attribution) and once straight-line, and compare how front-loaded the expense is.
  • Expense a 4-year cliff-vesting option grant twice: once with an estimated leaver rate that is trued up each year, once recognising forfeitures only when employees leave.
  • Compare four Lumen Robotics awards after Year 2 of 3 and see why a missed revenue target reverses expense while a missed share-price (TSR) target does not.
  • Account for the repricing of Lumen Robotics' underwater 2026 options at the end of Year 2: the incremental fair value, the new Year 3 expense, and why a value-reducing change saves nothing.
  • Calculate the amounts and post Lumen Robotics' 2026 share-based payment entries: the option expense, RSUs vesting into shares and employees exercising options for cash.
  • Apply the treasury stock method to Lumen Robotics' options and RSUs, leave out the antidilutive grant and calculate basic and diluted EPS.
  • Calculate the expense of Lumen Robotics' employee share purchase plan, add it to the other awards and chart the total share-based compensation expense for five years.

About this course

Equity awards affect the income statement for years, and the expense depends on valuation, vesting pattern and forfeitures. This course works through each element. You value an option grant with Black-Scholes and compare straight-line with tranche-by-tranche expense under cliff and graded vesting. Forfeitures are handled both by estimating them in advance and by recording them as they occur. You contrast restricted stock units, options and performance shares with market and non-market conditions, measure incremental fair value when awards are repriced and post journal entries for expense, vesting and exercise. The last labs compute diluted EPS under the treasury stock method and an employee purchase plan discount. For accountants, auditors and equity plan administrators.
