Algorithms by the Numbers: Counting Steps, Growth Rates, Binary Search, Sorting Comparisons, Hash Table Load & Caching
Understand algorithm efficiency without writing code: count loop steps, compare growth rates, trace binary search and a sorting pass, size hash tables and caches and choose an algorithm for a time budget, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Count the steps of a nested loop, of a loop that visits each pair once and of a loop that halves its range, and show that for 1,000 items almost all the work of a routine comes from its n² part.
- Fill a growth table from 10 to 1,000,000 items, measure how far n² runs away from n · log₂ n, compute 2ⁿ for small n and chart where it overtakes n².
- Compare the worst-case comparisons of linear and binary search from 20 to a billion items, then trace a binary search through a sorted list of 15 parcel numbers step by step.
- Count the comparisons of a simple sort and a merge-style sort up to a million items, then trace one pass of a neighbour-swapping sort on eight values and see the largest value travel to the end.
- Turn step counts into run times on a fictional test machine and work out the largest input each algorithm class can handle within a one-second budget.
- Calculate the load factor of four hash tables, estimate the probes per lookup with a simplified model, find how many items fit before a resize and size a table for next year as a power of two.
- Calculate the average access time of a cache in front of a slow database, compare six cache sizes, work out the hit rate needed for a target and pick the smallest cache size that reaches it.
- Count the copies a growing list makes with doubling and with fixed steps, then work out run times for three ways of finding duplicates and choose the one that fits both the time and the memory budget.
About this course
Big-O makes far more sense once you have counted the steps yourself. This course lets you do that in tables rather than code. You count steps in single, nested and halving loops, then compare n log n, n² and 2ⁿ in growth tables. You trace a binary search against a linear one, count sorting comparisons and run one sorting pass by hand. Time-budget labs turn steps per second into run times and find the largest input that fits in a second. You then size hash tables by load factor and expected probes, estimate cache hit rates and access times, and work out amortised cost for a growing array before choosing an algorithm. For coding learners, students and interview candidates.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
