Programming Logic by Hand: Variables, Trace Tables, Conditions, Loops, Arrays & Strings, Functions, Recursion and Debugging Off-by-One Errors
Learn to read code the way a computer runs it. You will trace toy pseudocode line by line, track every variable in a trace table, test each branch of a condition, unroll counting and while loops, search and reverse arrays and strings, call functions with parameter tables, follow a recursive call stack down and back up and hunt off-by-one bugs, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Trace an eight-line program in a trace table: you work out a ← a + b from the row above, copy a into a temporary t, finish the swap of a and b and update c with the new b.
- Run a grading chain on seven test cases with IFS, find the branch line each case reaches, evaluate a bonus rule with AND, OR and NOT and measure how many branches the test table covers.
- Trace a for-loop that adds i × bonus to an accumulator, count the passes of a loop with a step, and number every run of the body in a nested loop.
- Peel off the digits of 4,706 with MOD, count how often a halving loop runs before n drops below its limit, fill a missing step of a toy 3n + 1 sequence and read a guard flag that stops a loop after ten steps.
- Trace the running maximum of an eight-element array, convert its position into a 0-based index, read a word backwards character by character with MID and LEN and check whether it is a palindrome.
- Evaluate a function for a table of calls, keep a running total of its return values, and trace a main program in which a procedure with a side effect changes the result of a later call.
- Fill the missing return values in two call-stack tables – a product of 1 … n and a digit sum – trace the same product with a loop and count how deep the digit-sum stack grows.
- Put a buggy and a fixed loop side by side and compute the fixed total, correct a maximum that starts at the wrong value, mark each test as Pass or Fail and chart the bugs found in the club's homework review.
About this course
Many beginners write loops they cannot predict. This course trains exactly that skill without installing any language. You run short pseudocode programs by hand, one executed line per row and one column per variable, starting with a swap through a temporary variable. Grading rules become if / else-if chains, and a test table checks that every branch is reached. For loops build running totals, while loops peel off digits with MOD and stop safely with a guard. Arrays and strings bring index positions, a running maximum and reversed words. Functions are traced from a call log, recursion through a call-stack table, and the final lab hunts boundary bugs. For coding beginners, students and exam preparation.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
