  • Turn twelve days of open, high, low and close prices into daily returns, candle bodies, wicks and a bullish/bearish label.
  • Smooth 30 daily closes with a 5-day and a 10-day simple moving average and build a 10-day exponential moving average row by row.
  • Label each day as uptrend or downtrend, detect the days where SMA5 crosses SMA10 and count the signals.
  • Calculate the 14-day average gain and loss with Wilder's smoothing and turn them into the Relative Strength Index.
  • Build the MACD line from two EMAs, smooth it into a signal line and read the histogram, with periods scaled down to fit 30 days.
  • Draw 20-day Bollinger Bands around the SMA20 and measure where the close sits inside them with %B.
  • Turn the last 10 days' highs and lows into resistance and support levels and flag breakouts and breakdowns.
  • Backtest the SMA5/SMA10 crossover rule without look-ahead bias and compare total return, win rate and maximum drawdown with buy-and-hold.

About this course

Charting software draws indicators instantly, but few traders know exactly how they are computed. This course makes you build them. You read candles from open, high, low and close and calculate daily returns, then construct simple and exponential moving averages and their crossover signals. The relative strength index uses Wilder's smoothing, MACD combines a line, signal and histogram, and Bollinger Bands come with the %B measure. You flag support, resistance and breakouts with formulas and finish by backtesting a simple rule against buy-and-hold to see whether it actually adds value.
