What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn five share prices into market caps, earnings per share and P/E ratios, and see how earnings growth moves a price.
- Split four years of Brightwater Foods returns into price and dividends, and grow $10,000 with the dividends reinvested.
- Compare the same $250 monthly plan started at 25, 30, 35 and 40, and put a dollar figure on waiting ten years.
- Grow $50,000 for 30 years in a low-cost index ETF and in an active fund with a higher expense ratio, and measure what the fee costs.
- Measure how Lena's eight-holding portfolio is spread across sectors, and how much technology she really owns once you look inside her ETF.
- Invest $300 a month in the Atlas ETF for six months and see why your average cost ends up below the average price.
- After a strong year for stocks, you bring Lena's four funds back to her 50/20/25/5 target and work out every trade.
- Compare a buy-and-hold investor with an active trader who earns the same gross return, and see what costs and taxes do over 20 years.
About this course
New investors hear a lot of jargon; this course replaces it with calculations you can check. You begin with share price, market capitalisation, earnings per share and the P/E ratio, then measure total return from price changes and dividends. Compounding shows what a delay in starting really costs, and a fee comparison reveals how expense ratios separate index funds from active funds over time. You measure diversification through portfolio weights and sector exposure, compare average cost with average price in regular investing and rebalance a portfolio back to its targets. A final lab quantifies how commissions, spreads and taxes reduce the returns of frequent trading. For beginners; educational material, not personal investment advice.
