Autoencoders & GANs by Hand: Encoders, Bottlenecks, Reconstruction Error, Anomaly Scores, Latent Space, Variational Sampling, Generator vs Discriminator Losses & Mode Collapse

Open up the two classic generative networks. You will squeeze tiny toy images through a bottleneck and decode them, measure reconstruction error, take one training step, flag anomalies, walk through a latent space, sample a variational code with given noise and a KL term, score real and fake samples with a discriminator and read a generator–discriminator training log for mode collapse, with given weights and every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Encode six four-pixel toy images into two-value codes with given weights and count how many parameters an encoder needs compared with the size of its input.
  • Rebuild four toy images from their two-value codes with a given decoder, squash the outputs with a sigmoid, and measure how far each reconstruction is from the original.
  • Take one gradient-descent step on the decoder weights for one toy image and show that the reconstruction loss really drops.
  • Use reconstruction error as an anomaly score, set a threshold from normal samples with PERCENTILE.INC, flag new samples and measure precision and recall on a labelled toy set.
  • Plot the codes of the training images, walk in a straight line from one code to another and decode the mixes, and measure how much a denoising autoencoder cleans up a noisy input.
  • Turn the encoder outputs μ and log-variance into sampled codes with a given ε table, calculate the KL term per sample and combine it with the reconstruction loss for three β values.
  • Score real and generated toy images with a given discriminator, calculate both GAN losses and follow them through a short training log.
  • Read a 12-step GAN training log, count the steps near the balance point and check the generated samples for mode collapse with STDEV.S and a COUNTIFS diversity table, and chart the scores over the run.

About this course

Generative models feel opaque until you compute one yourself. This course uses four-pixel toy images and fixed weights, so every number stays visible. You squeeze each image into a two-number code, rebuild it with a sigmoid decoder and measure the squared error. One gradient-descent step on the decoder proves the loss really falls. Reconstruction error then becomes an outlier detector with a percentile cut-off, judged by precision and recall. You plot codes, blend between images and clean a corrupted input. The variational version samples codes from a mean and log-variance and adds a weighted KL penalty. Finally a discriminator and a generator compete, and a training log is checked for collapsing variety. For machine learning students and curious developers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
