How Image Generators Work by Hand: Noise Schedules, Forward Noising, Denoising Steps, Guidance Scale & Latent Sizes
Follow a toy diffusion model through its numbers: noise schedules, how an 8-pixel image is noised, signal-to-noise per step, one denoising step, guidance scale and why latent images are cheaper, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn an 8-pixel greyscale strip into the −1…1 numbers an image generator works with, measure its contrast, and turn a model output back into valid pixel values with clipping.
- Build two noise schedules for a 20-step toy run: a linear β with its running product ᾱ, and a cosine ᾱ with the β that belongs to it.
- Noise the Mistlet strip to four steps of the schedule with one fixed noise column and measure how far the pixels move away from the clean image.
- Turn both schedules into a signal-to-noise ratio in decibels, find the step where noise becomes louder than the image and chart how the two schedules fade.
- Take the network's noise guess at t = 10, rebuild an estimate of the clean image, measure its error and take one reverse step back to t = 9.
- Combine two noise predictions with a guidance scale, see how the estimated image changes and find the scale from which pixels are pushed out of range.
- Price six step counts for the Mistlet sampler: seconds per image with guidance, cost per 1,000 images, extra quality per extra second and the cheapest setting that reaches a quality target.
- Count the numbers in pixel and latent tensors for four image sizes, work out the compression factor and compare the memory a batch needs.
About this course
Image generators start from pure noise and remove it step by step, but what happens to the numbers along the way? This course follows a toy diffusion model through them. You represent an eight-pixel image as values scaled to −1…1, compare linear and cosine noise schedules and their running product, and mix image and noise at several time steps. Signal-to-noise per step, as plain ratios and in decibels, shows where the image disappears. You then turn a predicted noise value into an estimated image and take one reverse step, blend prompt and no-prompt predictions with a guidance scale, and relate step counts to time and cost per image. Latent tensor sizes explain the memory savings. For AI learners, developers and digital artists.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
