How Compression Works by Hand: Run-Length Encoding, Symbol Frequencies, Entropy, Huffman Codes, Base-64 Overhead & Lossy Quantisation

Shrink data in a spreadsheet and see why it works: run-length codes, letter frequencies, entropy as the limit, Huffman code lengths, encoding overhead and what lossy rounding costs in quality, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Measure four messages in characters and bits, work out how many bits a fixed-length code needs for a 27-symbol alphabet, and calculate how much that code saves compared with one byte per character.
  • Split a scan line into single pixels with MID, flag where each new run starts, count the runs, and compare the run-length size with the raw size – then see why a noisy line gets bigger.
  • Count how often each level code occurs in 32 sensor readings, turn the counts into probabilities, measure the surprise of each symbol in bits and chart the frequencies.
  • Calculate the entropy of the river sensor step by step, compare it with a 2-bit fixed code, and compute the entropy of two other sources in one SUMPRODUCT formula each.
  • Follow the merge table of a Huffman tree with SMALL, calculate the average code length with SUMPRODUCT, check the code with the Kraft sum and compare it with a fixed-length code and the entropy.
  • Calculate the compression ratio and saving of five files, find the one that got bigger, work out the base-64 size of a compressed file for sending as text, and calculate the overall saving.
  • Round twelve brightness values to multiples of a step with MROUND, measure the error, rate the quality with a signal-to-noise ratio in decibels and work out how many bits per pixel the coarser values need.
  • Turn compression ratios into stored gigabytes per data type, add up what the archive really stores, calculate how long the monthly backup takes over the link and chart raw against stored volumes.

About this course

Why does a text file shrink to a fraction of its size while a photo barely compresses again? This course answers by letting you compress data yourself. You measure the raw size of text in bits and bytes, encode scan lines with run-length encoding and spot the cases where it makes files bigger. Counting symbol frequencies leads to probabilities and surprise, and entropy gives the minimum average bits per symbol. You build Huffman codes by repeatedly merging the two smallest weights and compare their average length with the entropy limit. Compression ratios, Base-64 overhead and headers come next, followed by lossy quantisation with error and signal-to-noise ratio. A capstone estimates storage and transfer savings. For developers, IT students and curious learners.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
