What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Add up character-set sizes for five password types, compute every search space N^L and see that 12 lowercase letters beat 8 characters from all 95 printable ones.
  • Convert search spaces into entropy bits with LOG(N, 2), rate five password types with an approximate VLOOKUP and find the length a random generator needs for 80 bits.
  • Size a dice-based word list, compute the bits per word, build an entropy table for 3 to 8 words and find how many words beat 80 bits.
  • Compute the average number of guesses for four random passwords and turn them into years under four illustrative attack speeds with one mixed-reference formula, then count the cases that fall within a year.
  • Fill an entropy grid for lengths 6–20 and three character sets with one formula, chart it, and measure what adding symbols buys compared with adding characters.
  • Compare three password policies for 2,400 staff: minimum random entropy, expected compromised accounts per year with a simple risk model, the risk reduction and the yearly loss avoided.
  • Compute the chance that a reused password leaks from at least one of six sites, build a table for 1 to 20 sites, chart it and extend it to several years.
  • Compute how many online guesses two lockout policies allow per year, the chance of hitting a 6-digit PIN, the chance of guessing a one-time code before lockout, and the expected takeovers for 120 leaked passwords with MFA.

About this course

Password rules are often based on habit rather than numbers. This course lets you measure strength directly. You calculate search space from character sets and length, convert it into bits of entropy and rate the result. Passphrases built from word lists are compared by bits per word. Using guesses per second you estimate time to crack for online and offline attacks, and an entropy grid with a chart shows why length usually beats complexity. You compare policy options such as minimum length, blocklists and multi-factor authentication, model the risk of reusing a password across many sites and see how lockouts and MFA cap online guessing. For IT administrators, security students and policy writers; educational, not a security audit.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
