Modular Arithmetic & Cryptography Basics: From Caesar to Toy RSA

MOD and clock arithmetic, Caesar and affine ciphers, frequency analysis, Euclid and the extended Euclid inverse, square-and-multiply, a complete toy RSA key and ISBN/Luhn check digits: 8 graded labs (toy keys only, never for real security).

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Split game times into hours and minutes with QUOTIENT and MOD, then use MOD to wrap a 24-hour clock and a letter wheel.
  • Turn the word VAULTKEY into numbers, encrypt it with a Caesar shift and an affine key, and decrypt it again with the modular inverse.
  • Count every letter of an intercepted message with COUNTIF, chart the counts, find the most frequent letter and work out the Caesar shift.
  • Run Euclid's algorithm step by step for a 1,092 × 852 cm floor, read off the greatest common divisor and confirm it with GCD.
  • Find the inverse of 17 modulo 3,120 with an extended-Euclid step table: quotients, remainders and the coefficient t that becomes the private key d.
  • Compute 2790^2753 mod 3233 with a 12-row square-and-multiply table: the bits of the exponent, repeated squaring and the running result.
  • Build a complete toy RSA key from p = 17 and q = 11, encrypt the message 88 with e = 7 and decrypt it again with d = 23, multiplying step by step mod n.
  • Compute the check digit of an ISBN-13 with alternating weights and the Luhn check digit of a ticket number, the same MOD 10 idea used on payment cards.

About this course

Modern encryption rests on a surprisingly small amount of number theory, and this course lets you compute all of it yourself. You start with modular or clock arithmetic and use it to encrypt letters with Caesar and affine ciphers, then break a Caesar cipher with frequency analysis. A step table runs Euclid's algorithm for the greatest common divisor, and the extended version gives a modular inverse. You speed up large powers with square-and-multiply, generate keys for a toy RSA system and encrypt and decrypt messages with them. The last lab looks at check digits and hashing ideas through ISBN-13 and the Luhn algorithm. Designed for students, puzzle fans and developers curious about how encryption works; not for real security use.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
