What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Compute the mean and sample standard deviation of four city indicators, turn every value into a z-score, count the unusual cities and see why unscaled data would let one variable dominate.
- Build the 4 × 4 covariance matrix of the raw data and the correlation matrix of the z-scores with one MMULT each, link the two with r = cov ÷ (sx · sy) and colour the correlations.
- Multiply a start vector by R again and again, normalise it to length 1 each time and watch it settle on the first principal direction; the stretch factor settles on the first eigenvalue.
- Check that R only stretches v₁, compute the eigenvalue λ₁ with the Rayleigh quotient, the total variance as the trace of R and the share of variance PC1 explains.
- Remove PC1 from R (deflation), run the power iteration on what is left to get v₂, then compute λ₂ and the variance PC1 and PC2 explain together.
- Turn six eigenvalues into explained and cumulative variance shares, apply the 80% rule and the Kaiser rule, and draw a scree plot to look for the elbow.
- Project every city onto PC1 and PC2, compute the loadings that link components back to the indicators and map all ten cities in a scatter chart.
- Rebuild the z-scores from one component (score × direction), measure the squared reconstruction error, express it as variance lost and compare k = 1 with k = 2 using MMULT.
About this course
Principal component analysis is often used as a black box. In this course you compute it from scratch, so every number has a meaning. You standardise variables into z-scores and build covariance and correlation matrices with MMULT and TRANSPOSE. Power iteration finds the first eigenvector through repeated multiplication, and its eigenvalue tells you how much variance the first component explains. Deflation then reveals the second component. A scree plot and cumulative variance help decide how many components to keep. You calculate component scores and loadings to place and interpret a set of cities on a chart, and the final lab measures the reconstruction error of keeping only k components. For data analysts and statistics students.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
