Cross-Validation & Hyperparameter Tuning by Hand: Train/Validation/Test Splits, k-Fold Scores, Grid Search, Overfitting Curves & Data Leakage

Choose model settings without fooling yourself. You will split data into train, validation and test sets, assign k folds, score a simple model fold by fold, run a small grid search over settings, read under- and overfitting curves, spot leakage and time-ordering mistakes and report an honest final score, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Assign 20 days to train, validation and test with MOD on a given shuffle number, count the days per split and compare the share of busy days in each split with the whole dataset.
  • Deal the 16 pool days into 4 folds with MOD, find the fold that ends up without a single busy day and fix it with stratified folds built from a running count within each class.
  • Measure the distance from a held-out day to the 12 days of the other folds, rank the neighbours, average the rentals of the k nearest and score the prediction against the actual value.
  • Turn 16 out-of-fold predictions into absolute errors, score every fold with its mean absolute error, average the four fold scores into the cross-validation estimate and measure how much they spread.
  • Average a grid of six k values × five fold scores, add a standard error to every row, find the setting with the lowest mean error and apply the one-standard-error rule to pick a simpler, equally good setting.
  • Compare training and validation error for trees of depth 1 to 8, compute the gap, label every depth as underfitting, good fit or overfitting, find the sweet spot and draw both curves in one line chart.
  • Scale temperatures with minimum and maximum taken from the training rows only, flag records that appear in two folds and check a forecasting rule month by month in time order instead of with shuffled folds.
  • Average the fold scores of four candidate models, pick the winner by its CV MAE, score the retrained model once on the four locked test days and chart the fold scores for the report.

About this course

A model that scores brilliantly in development and poorly in use usually was not tested fairly. This course shows you how fair testing works by doing every step in a spreadsheet. You split a small fictional data set into training, validation and test piles from a shuffle number, then assign k folds with MOD and keep classes balanced. A simple nearest-neighbour model predicts each held-out day, and mean absolute error per fold gives a cross-validation estimate with its spread. A setting-by-fold grid picks the best k, refined by the one-standard-error rule. Training and validation error curves reveal under- and overfitting, leakage traps are caught, and the test set is scored exactly once. For data science learners and analysts.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
