What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a fictional training corpus of six sources into raw tokens, remove the duplicates source by source and split off a validation set, so you know how many training tokens the run will really see.
  • Estimate the training compute of four fictional model sizes with the 6 × parameters × tokens rule of thumb, write the huge results in scientific notation and compare the plan with a tokens-per-parameter heuristic.
  • Convert training FLOPs into GPU-hours with peak speed and utilisation, turn them into wall-clock days for the GPUs you have and size the cluster in whole nodes so the largest run finishes before its deadline.
  • Price the same training run on three fictional GPU plans, including a minimum commitment and the extra hours lost to interruptions, and find the cheapest plan and its saving.
  • Price a fictional fine-tuning job from examples, tokens and epochs, count the trainable parameters of a low-rank adapter and compare the GPU memory it needs with full fine-tuning.
  • Count the runs of a fictional hyper-parameter grid, estimate its GPU-hours with early stopping, price the sweep and work out how many seeds per configuration the next budget allows.
  • Take six fictional pilot runs, fit a power law between compute and validation loss with LN and SLOPE, predict the loss of the big run with FORECAST.LINEAR and EXP, and chart the curve.
  • Add the costs that are easy to forget (checkpoint storage and evaluation runs) to the fictional Kestrel-XL budget, put a contingency on top and show in a chart where the money goes.

About this course

Training or fine-tuning a model is expensive enough that the budget should exist before the first job starts. This course shows you how to build one. You estimate dataset tokens from documents and words, allow for deduplication and set a validation split. Using the six-times-parameters-times-tokens rule and scientific notation, you calculate training compute, then convert it into GPU-hours at realistic utilisation and the cluster size a deadline needs. You price those hours as on-demand, reserved or interruptible, and cost fine-tuning with epochs, low-rank adapters and memory per parameter. Experiment-grid labs count runs across learning rates, batch sizes and seeds with early stopping, and you fit a power-law scaling curve to predict loss. For ML engineers, researchers and technical managers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
