Hidden Markov Models by Hand: States & Emissions, the Forward Algorithm, Viterbi Decoding, Smoothing & Simple Learning from Counts

Uncover hidden states from what you can observe. You will set up transition and emission tables, compute sequence probabilities with the forward algorithm, find the most likely hidden path with Viterbi and backtracking, smooth with forward–backward, estimate tables from labelled counts and tag a short toy sentence, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Complete a two-state weather transition table, push today's distribution one day forward with SUMPRODUCT, compute a two-step probability and the probability of a whole four-day weather path.
  • Add an emission table to the weather chain, multiply start, transition and emission probabilities for all 8 possible weather paths behind three logbook days, find the most likely path and add the joints up to the probability of the logbook itself.
  • Fill the forward table α for five logbook days – start × emission on day 1, then yesterday's α times the transitions times today's emission – and check that three days reproduce the sum of all 8 paths from lesson 2.
  • Replace the forward sum by a maximum, store for every state which previous state gave that maximum, read the best last state and walk the back-pointers backwards to the most likely weather path.
  • Turn two five-day paths into log-probabilities with LN, compare them by the difference of logs, convert that back into a ratio with EXP and see a long product underflow to zero while its logarithm stays an ordinary number.
  • Fill the backward table β from the last day towards the first, combine it with the forward table into posterior probabilities for every day and compare the posterior answer for day 2 with the Viterbi path.
  • Count weather transitions with COUNTIFS on two shifted ranges, turn them into transition probabilities, estimate emission probabilities from labelled days and use add-one smoothing so that an outcome never seen in a state still gets a small chance.
  • Run Viterbi with three hidden tags over the original sentence «the keeper lights lamps», score a toy tagger against gold tags and chart the posterior tag probabilities per word.

About this course

Hidden Markov models sound abstract until you fill in the tables yourself. In this course a small fictional weather-and-logbook example makes every probability visible. You refresh Markov chains with transition tables and two-step probabilities, then add hidden states and emissions and compute the joint probability of one path. The forward algorithm builds alpha tables that give the probability of a whole logbook, and Viterbi decoding uses MAX and back-pointers to recover the most likely path. Log probabilities fix underflow, backward beta tables give smoothed posteriors for each day, and counts from labelled data estimate the tables with add-one smoothing. A toy part-of-speech tagger with three tags applies it all. For students of machine learning, NLP and statistics.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
