Reinforcement Learning by Hand: Bandits, Q-Learning & Value Iteration
Build the core RL algorithms cell by cell with given random numbers: bandit estimates, ε-greedy and UCB, discounted returns, the Bellman equations, value iteration, Q-learning updates and policy extraction, every cell checked live.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Estimate the value of three app offers from 15 visits with sample averages, then rebuild the same estimate step by step with the incremental update rule and compare it with a constant step size.
- Run an ε-greedy agent for 12 app visits with given random numbers: decide explore or exploit, pick the offer, collect the reward, add up the cumulative reward and chart it against always showing the best offer.
- Score four offers with the UCB1 rule: average reward plus an exploration bonus that is large for rarely tried offers, and see why UCB picks a different offer than greedy.
- Calculate the discounted return of one episode of Robo the warehouse robot forwards (discount factors) and backwards (G(t) = R + γ·G(t+1)) and see why both give the same number.
- Evaluate a coin-flip policy for Robo in a five-cell aisle with the Bellman expectation equation, sweep after sweep, and check that the exact values are a fixed point of the equation.
- Run value iteration for Robo on a slippery floor: in every sweep each cell takes the better of left and right (MAX), the values climb towards the optimal V*, and a line chart of the largest change shows the convergence.
- Replay eight logged steps of Robo through the Q-learning rule: look up the best next value, build the TD target and TD error, and update the Q-table column by column as the dock's reward travels back along the aisle.
- Turn Robo's optimal values into Q-values and a policy (the best action per cell), then measure how much better the optimal policy is than the coin flip, cell by cell and on average.
About this course
Reinforcement learning is usually taught with code, which hides the arithmetic that makes it work. This course exposes every number. You estimate arm values in a multi-armed bandit with sample averages and incremental updates, compare epsilon-greedy exploration with upper confidence bounds, and compute discounted returns. On a small grid world you evaluate a random policy sweep by sweep with the Bellman expectation equation, then switch to value iteration until values converge. Eight hand-computed Q-learning updates show how a Q-table fills in, and a final lab extracts the best action in each state and compares random with optimal behaviour. Perfect for students and developers who want intuition before frameworks.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
