Blood Pressure Data Analysis: Home Readings, Averages, Categories & Trends

Clean a home-monitor log, average morning and evening readings with AVERAGEIFS, derive pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure, classify every reading with threshold tables, measure the weekly trend with SLOPE, quantify variability, compare clinic and home averages and build a summary for a doctor's visit: 8 graded labs on one fictional person's synthetic readings. Educational only, not medical advice.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Flag the readings an app synced twice, mark implausible values with limits kept in cells, count the clean readings and see how much the cleaning changes the mean.
  • Average a 7-day home-monitoring protocol by session, leave out the first day like many protocols do, and measure the morning–evening difference.
  • Derive two numbers from every reading, the pulse pressure and the mean arterial pressure, average them and count the readings with a wide pulse pressure.
  • Look up a level for the systolic and for the diastolic value in two threshold tables, take the higher one and turn it into a category name.
  • Condense six weeks of readings into weekly means, measure the trend in mmHg per week with SLOPE and chart both lines.
  • Measure how much the morning readings swing: the standard deviation, the coefficient of variation, the range and the average change from one day to the next.
  • Average the clinic readings the way many protocols do, compare them with the home mean, flag each against its own threshold and name the pattern with nested IF.
  • Turn two weeks of readings into a one-screen summary: readings per category, the mean as SYS/DIA, a rule that highlights the highest readings and a column chart.

About this course

Home readings are useful only when they are tidy and summarised. This course teaches the data handling side of a blood pressure log, not medical advice. You remove duplicates and implausible values, then compare morning and evening averages. You calculate mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure, and assign each reading a category from a threshold table with an approximate lookup. Weekly averages are charted with a trend line and slope, and variability is described with standard deviation, coefficient of variation, range and average real variability. You also compare clinic and home figures for white-coat and masked patterns, and prepare a summary with counts per category to bring to an appointment. For people tracking readings, carers and health data students.
