Glucose Data Analysis: Time in Range, GMI & Variability from CGM Data

Check data sufficiency, convert mg/dL and mmol/L, compute time in range, below and above with COUNTIFS, the glucose management indicator, the coefficient of variation, the daily pattern by hour, low events of 15 minutes or more and a weekly summary with highlights and a stacked chart: 8 graded labs on one fictional CGM user's synthetic data. Educational only, not medical advice.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Work out how many readings a CGM should deliver per day, compute the capture % for every day and for the whole 14 days, and count the days below the 70 % target.
  • Convert a day of readings from mg/dL to mmol/L, compute the mean in both units, find the day's highest value and turn a mmol/L target into mg/dL.
  • Compute the share of a day's readings in range (70–180 mg/dL), below 70, below 54 and above 180 with COUNTIF and COUNTIFS.
  • Compute the reading-weighted mean glucose of 14 days, turn it into the GMI in % and mmol/mol and compare it with a lab HbA1c.
  • Compare two days with a similar mean but very different swings: standard deviation, coefficient of variation (SD ÷ mean), a stable/unstable flag at 36 % and the largest SD that would still count as stable.
  • Stack four days on one 24-hour clock: extract the hour, average the readings of each hour with AVERAGEIFS, find the peak hour and chart the daily pattern.
  • Flag every reading below 70 mg/dL, build a running counter of consecutive low readings and count only the lows that last at least 15 minutes as events.
  • Finish a one-week CGM summary: time above range per day, the days meeting all three consensus targets, a rule that highlights the days with too little time in range, and a stacked chart of the time in ranges.

About this course

Continuous glucose monitors produce thousands of readings, and standard report metrics summarise them. Here you calculate those metrics yourself to understand what they mean. You check readings per day and data sufficiency, compute mean glucose and convert between mg/dL and mmol/L, and count time in range, below and above with standard bands. The glucose management indicator is derived from the mean, and variability is measured with standard deviation and coefficient of variation. An hourly profile shows daily patterns, consecutive low readings are grouped into events of at least 15 minutes, and a weekly summary report with a stacked chart brings it together. For data-minded people with diabetes, carers, students and health app developers. Educational only, not medical advice.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?
