Mechanical Reasoning Test Practice: Levers, Gears, Pulleys, Inclined Planes, Springs, Hydraulics & Belt Drives
Prepare for mechanical aptitude tests used in technical apprenticeships and trades hiring: moments on levers, gear directions and speeds, pulley advantage, ramps, springs, hydraulic presses and belt drives, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Solve six exam-style lever questions with moments (force × distance), compute the mechanical advantage, find where the pivot must sit to balance a loaded plank and how far out an extra weight must sit to balance a seesaw.
- Work out the speed and turning direction of every gear in a six-gear chain, see why the gears in between change the direction but not the final speed, then solve a three-stage compound train with PRODUCT.
- Solve six pulley systems: the effort from the number of supporting rope segments (with an efficiency where the question gives one), the rope you must pull, the work done by the effort, and the smallest number of segments for a given maximum pull.
- Find the push needed along five frictionless ramps from height and length, their mechanical advantage, the push on a ramp given by its angle with SIN and RADIANS, and the ideal effort on a screw jack from its pitch and handle radius.
- Find the extension and loaded length of six springs with Hooke's law, then the combined stiffness of two springs in series and how far a load stretches them side by side in parallel.
- Solve five hydraulic press questions: the pressure under the small piston, the force on the large piston and how far the large piston moves, then the force when the question gives piston diameters instead of areas.
- Solve five belt drives for the driven pulley's speed, the belt speed in metres per second and the driven pulley's direction for open and crossed belts, then the effort on a winch handle with the wheel-and-axle rule.
- Build the answer key of a 10-question mixed test as one formula per question, then score a fictional practice attempt and count the questions that went over the time budget per question.
About this course
Mechanical aptitude tests for apprenticeships and technical jobs keep returning to the same few principles. This course lets you practise each one with calculations you can check. You balance levers with moments and find mechanical advantage, work out gear speeds from tooth counts and decide turning direction, including idler gears. Pulley systems show how supporting ropes trade effort for rope pulled, and inclined planes and screws link force to distance through equal work. You calculate spring extension in series and parallel, piston forces and travel in hydraulic presses, and pulley and belt speeds for open and crossed belts. A timed mixed test with ten exam-style questions, answer key and score completes it. For apprenticeship applicants and trades candidates.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
