Robotics by the Numbers: Wheel Encoders, Odometry, Two-Link Arm Kinematics, Motor Gearing & PID Control Steps
Do the maths of a small robot in a spreadsheet: encoder ticks to distance, where a two-wheeled robot thinks it is, arm joint angles to tool position, gear ratios and torque, and a PID controller step by step, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn Pip's wheel size and encoder resolution into a distance per tick, then convert six logged runs from ticks into metres and average speed.
- Turn eight steps of left and right wheel distances into heading changes and track where Pip thinks it is with a COS/SIN step table that starts from a known pose.
- Turn a 0.4 % wheel-size error into a heading drift per leg, find the real heading of each leg of a planned 2 m square and see how far from the start Pip really ends.
- Calculate where the elbow and the tool of Pip's two-link arm end up for six poses, from the shoulder and elbow angles with COS, SIN and RADIANS.
- Check whether a target is inside the arm's reach, measure how far each of 16 angle candidates misses it and pick the best shoulder angle with SMALL and INDEX/MATCH.
- Compare four fictional motor-and-gearbox options for Pip: wheel speed and top speed from the gear ratio, the torque at the wheel after gearbox losses and the torque each wheel needs to climb a 15° ramp.
- Replay 1.1 seconds of Pip's speed log and recompute the PID controller row by row: error, running integral, derivative and the output that the three gains make of them.
- Read the peak speed of each gain set from the logged step responses, turn it into overshoot, work out the battery runtime from the average current and chart the three responses against each other.
About this course
Before code moves a robot, numbers decide where it goes. This course works through those numbers in a spreadsheet. You turn encoder ticks into distance and wheel speed, then update the position and heading of a two-wheeled robot step by step. A small error in wheel size shows how drift bends a square path. For a two-link arm, you convert joint angles into elbow and tool positions, check whether a target is reachable and search a grid for the nearest solution. Gear ratios link motor speed to wheel speed and torque, and a PID controller is calculated one error at a time. Three gain sets and a battery runtime estimate are compared on a chart. For robotics students, makers and engineering apprentices.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
