UPS & Backup Power Sizing: VA vs Watts, Runtime, Batteries & Generators

Build a load inventory in W and VA, size a UPS with headroom on both ratings, estimate runtime, size battery strings for a target runtime, plan replacements for heat, size a generator for motor starts, model N+1 vs 2N availability and compare 10-year cost of ownership: 8 graded labs on a fictional server room.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • List the equipment in Corvane Labs' server room, turn measured watts into volt-amperes with each device's power factor, and find the overall power factor of the load.
  • Add growth and a design loading limit to Corvane's load, then pick the smallest UPS whose VA and W ratings both cover it.
  • Turn the battery string of the 10 kVA UPS into usable AC energy and estimate runtime at six load levels, then chart the runtime curve.
  • Size the battery for 15 minutes at Corvane's load: blocks per string from the DC bus voltage, the energy needed at end of life, and how many parallel strings that takes.
  • Estimate how long the VRLA batteries at five Corvane sites really last at their room temperatures, set a replacement interval and the battery cost per year.
  • Size the standby generator for Corvane's server room: running kVA of every load, the extra surge when a compressor starts, the peak, and the next standard generator size.
  • Turn the MTBF and repair time of one UPS module into availability, then compute the availability and yearly downtime of N, N+1, N+2 and 2N with BINOM.DIST.
  • Compare two UPS options for Corvane over ten years: purchase, energy lost in the UPS, maintenance and battery replacements, then chart the cumulative costs to find where the lines cross.

About this course

An undersized UPS fails exactly when it is needed. This course teaches you to size backup power with margin and evidence. You list loads in watts, apply power factor to get VA and choose a UPS with headroom on both ratings. Runtime is calculated from battery watt-hours and inverter efficiency, and you work out how many batteries in series and parallel reach a target. Battery ageing sets the replacement interval, and a simplified generator sizing accounts for motor starting surge. Redundancy schemes from N to 2N are compared with a binomial availability model, and a total cost of ownership compares lead-acid tower units with modular lithium-ion systems. Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
