What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn the rack counts and average draw of the six areas of Kestrel DC-1 into IT load in kW, annual energy in kWh and MWh, and compare the average with the peak.
- Calculate the monthly PUE and DCiE of Kestrel DC-1 from the utility and PDU meters, find the correct six-month PUE and chart how the summer cooling load pushes PUE up.
- Compare the power provisioned to each rack row of Hall B with its measured peak, find the stranded kW and how much of the hall's UPS capacity is still free to sell.
- Add up the heat sources of Hall C, convert kW to BTU/h and tons of refrigeration, and size the number of cooling units with ROUNDUP plus one redundant unit.
- Size the UPS for Kestrel DC-1's planned 2,600 kW critical load: the N module count, installed kW and loading for N, N+1, 2N and 2(N+1), and which design tolerates a whole system being offline.
- Price the annual energy of Kestrel DC-1 at its current PUE and three improvement projects, then calculate the savings and simple payback of each.
- Turn Kestrel DC-1's quarterly electricity into location-based and market-based emissions, the renewable share from a power purchase agreement, and the annual CUE.
- Forecast Kestrel DC-1's IT load from standard and AI/GPU racks to 2032, find the years without headroom, the AI share of the load and chart load growth against capacity.
About this course
Data centres consume huge amounts of power, and much of it never reaches the servers. This course teaches the calculations used to measure and plan that. You turn IT load into annual energy with a load factor and calculate PUE and DCiE. Capacity labs measure power per rack and stranded capacity. You convert cooling load between kilowatts, BTU per hour and tons of refrigeration, and size UPS installations for N, N+1 and 2N redundancy. Energy cost and savings from a better PUE follow, and carbon labs compare location-based and market-based emissions with CUE. The final lab tests how high-density GPU racks strain existing power capacity. For facility engineers, IT managers and sustainability analysts.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
