Wireless Link Budgets: dBm and mW, Free-Space Path Loss, Antenna Gain, Wall Losses, Fade Margin & Coverage Range
Work out whether a radio link will hold: transmit power in dBm, path loss over distance and frequency, antenna gains and cable losses, walls and floors, receiver sensitivity, fade margin and the range you can expect, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert Halden's device powers from milliwatts to dBm and back, add the gains and losses of one transmit chain in dB and turn the result into a plain power factor.
- Fill a path-loss table for six distances and three bands with one mixed-reference formula, then measure how much loss a longer distance and a higher frequency add.
- Look up the cable loss for four antenna sites from a two-way table, calculate the EIRP of each site, measure the headroom to Halden's design cap and colour the sites that exceed it.
- Calculate the free-space loss to six rooms, add the losses of the walls and floors in the way with XLOOKUP, total the indoor path loss and count the rooms beyond the scanners' limit.
- Complete the budget for six links: received power, fade margin against the receiver's sensitivity, a pass/fail verdict against Halden's required margin and the decibels still missing on the weak links.
- Turn the link budget around: the path loss a scanner link can afford, the maximum distance per band after an obstacle allowance, and how much a few extra decibels of margin shrink the range.
- Turn the received power in six rooms into a signal-to-noise ratio, look up the link rate with an approximate XLOOKUP, share it among the active devices and count the rooms below the needed throughput.
- Size the number of access points per floor for coverage and for capacity, find the worst survey margin in the workshop hall with MINIFS and chart all survey margins against the 10 dB target.
About this course
Will the signal make it from the access point to the far room, or across the yard to the shed? This course answers with a link budget you build yourself. You convert between milliwatts and dBm, add gains and losses, and calculate free-space path loss for different distances and frequencies. Antenna gain, cable loss per metre and connectors give the radiated power, while walls and floors are subtracted by material. On the receiver side you compare received power with sensitivity, check fade margin and solve for the maximum range per band. An approximate signal-to-noise rate lookup estimates throughput per device, and a coverage plan counts access points per floor. For network technicians, IT staff and radio hobbyists.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
