Container Resource Sizing: CPU & Memory Requests, Node Packing & Cost
Millicores and Mi/Gi, requests vs limits, p95 right-sizing, pods per node, node counts with DaemonSets and N+1, first-fit bin packing, cost per service and autoscaler replicas through the day: 8 graded labs on one fictional cluster.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert the CPU and memory requests of six Larkspur Labs containers, written the way they appear in a manifest, into cores and MiB, and total the memory in GiB.
- Compare the CPU requests and limits of six Larkspur Labs services with their measured usage, find the reserved CPU that sits idle and check how far the limits overcommit the cluster.
- Turn a week of p95 usage into new CPU and memory requests for eight services, rounded up to clean steps, and total how much CPU the cluster gets back.
- Work out the allocatable CPU and memory of four node types, how many orders-api pods fit on each and whether CPU or memory runs out first.
- Total the right-sized requests of all eight services and calculate how many 8×32 nodes Larkspur Labs needs, after DaemonSets, a target fill and one spare node.
- Place ten pods, largest first, onto four nodes with the first-fit rule, then measure how many nodes you used, how well they are packed and how close you got to the lower bound.
- Split the monthly node bill of the Larkspur Labs cluster into a price per vCPU and per GiB, charge each service for what it requests, show the idle cost and chart the result.
- Apply the horizontal autoscaler's scaling formula, plan the orders-api replicas for every two-hour slot of a busy day between a minimum and a maximum, total the replica-hours and chart load against replicas.
About this course
Over-generous resource requests waste money, while tight ones cause throttling and evictions. This course teaches you to set them on evidence. You convert CPU millicores and memory units, then compare requests and limits to see utilisation, idle reserve and overcommit. Right-sizing labs set requests from p95 usage plus headroom. You calculate pods per node from allocatable capacity and the binding resource, and work out how many nodes a cluster needs including daemon sets, a target fill and spare capacity. A first-fit bin packing lab places pods step by step, cost labs allocate node cost to services by requests, and the final lab applies the horizontal autoscaler formula across a day. For platform engineers, DevOps and SREs.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
