What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Read two daily load curves of a fictional power system, work out peak, average, daily energy and load factor, find the peak hour and build a load-duration curve with LARGE.
  • Turn installed MW and capacity factors into annual MWh per technology, build the energy mix, total the available capacity and compare the renewable share of energy with the renewable share of capacity.
  • Build the short-run marginal cost of seven plants from fuel price, efficiency, emission factor, carbon price and variable O&M, measure the spread of the merit order and find the carbon price at which gas becomes cheaper than coal.
  • Rank nine offers by marginal cost, sort them into a merit order with SMALL and INDEX/MATCH, add the cumulative capacity and find the clearing price for the evening demand.
  • Subtract wind and solar from demand to get the residual load, price every two-hour block from the merit-order staircase, and measure how much wind and solar lower the price.
  • Derate the 2030 fleet to firm capacity, compare it with the forecast peak, size the new peakers needed for the target reserve margin and count the stress-day hours that would be tight if the largest unit failed.
  • Calculate what a baseload plant earns above its costs, what price a solar park really captures compared with the baseload price, and how much a gas plant earns when it only runs in hours that pay.
  • Finish Tomas's report: the system's emissions and its intensity per MWh, a price-duration curve, the share of hours in which gas sets a high price, and a pie chart of the generation mix.

About this course

Why does the wholesale power price jump in some hours and collapse in others? This course answers that by letting you build a small electricity market yourself. You analyse a load curve for peak, average, load factor and load duration, then describe a generation fleet by capacity, availability and capacity factor. Marginal costs come from fuel price, efficiency, carbon price and variable maintenance. You stack plants into a merit order to find the clearing price, add wind and solar to see how residual load shifts it hour by hour, and test resource adequacy through reserve margins and shortfall hours. Generator labs cover inframarginal rent and solar capture prices, ending with a price-duration curve and emissions intensity. For energy analysts, engineering students and policy readers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
