What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a cabin's load list into Wh per day, add the inverter loss for the AC loads and a planning margin, and find the largest start-up surge the inverter has to cover.
  • Choose the system voltage of five projects with IFS, convert daily Wh into battery Ah and compare the peak currents with what the same loads would draw on 12 V.
  • Size Fernbrook's battery bank from the design energy, days of autonomy, usable depth of discharge and efficiency, then turn the Ah into strings and battery units.
  • Size the array for the design month, round up to whole panels and check how many panels fit in series before the cold-weather voltage passes the controller's input limit.
  • Size the charge controller's output current with a margin, pick the next rating up from a model list and compare the daily yield of a PWM and an MPPT controller.
  • Compare solar yield and load month by month, turn the daily balance into kWh per month, add up the generator hours needed in the deficit months and chart the year.
  • Calculate the minimum cable cross-section of five DC circuits from current, length and allowed voltage drop, pick standard sizes, check the actual drop and look up a fuse size from a fictional table.
  • Price the system, calculate its cost per kWh over the life, and compare it with running a generator through simple payback and a net present value.

About this course

Planning a cabin, van or remote site power system starts with honest numbers. You list every load with watts, hours, daily watt-hours and surge, choose between 12, 24 and 48 volts based on the currents involved, and size a battery bank for days of autonomy and depth of discharge, including series strings. The solar array follows from peak sun hours and derating, with a cold-weather check on string voltage. You rate a charge controller and compare PWM with MPPT, run a month-by-month energy balance to see surplus, deficit and generator top-up, size DC cables for voltage drop and fuses, and finish with system cost, cost per kWh and payback against a generator. For DIY builders, installers in training and students; follow local electrical rules.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
