Freight Tender Analysis: Lane Bids, Carrier Scoring & Award Scenarios

Run a shipper's truckload tender from lane file to award memo: baseline cost, normalising bids with fuel and accessorials, lowest bid per lane, carrier scorecards, best-value and capacity-aware award scenarios, backup carriers and leakage, savings and an award dashboard, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn Harlow's lane list into annual spend, each lane's share of spend and the rate per mile, and you calculate the network rate per mile the right way.
  • Convert eight bids in different formats into one comparable all-in cost per load: linehaul by rate basis, fuel from the shipper's surcharge table and expected stop-off charges.
  • From a long bid export you find, for every lane, the number of bids, the lowest bid, the carrier who placed it and how far ahead it is of the runner-up.
  • Calculate each carrier's tender acceptance rate and claims ratio, convert three service measures into points with tier tables and combine them into a weighted service score.
  • Build two award scenarios, lowest cost and best value (price adjusted for service), compare their spend and test the lowest-cost award against each carrier's committed capacity.
  • Model the routing guide waterfall: loads the primary rejects go to the backup, loads the backup rejects go to the spot market, and you put a price on the gap between planned and expected cost.
  • Calculate the savings of the award per lane and in total, express them as a volume-weighted percentage and flag the lanes where the award costs more than today.
  • Summarise the award by carrier (lanes, loads, spend and share of spend) and chart how the freight budget is split between the carriers.

About this course

Freight tenders produce hundreds of rates that are rarely comparable at first glance. You start with lane volumes and the current baseline cost, then normalise bids for rate basis, fuel surcharge and accessorial charges. The lowest bid per lane is found with MINIFS and lookups, and carrier scorecards add on-time performance, tender acceptance and claims. You compare award scenarios for lowest cost, best value and carrier capacity limits, assign backup carriers and assess routing guide risk, and calculate savings against the baseline by lane and in total. The final lab assembles an award summary dashboard for management sign-off. For transport buyers, logistics analysts, procurement teams and supply chain students.
