What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Work out what one mile really costs Ridgeline Freight's truck 101, split into fixed and variable costs.
- Compare five load offers by their posted rate, their all-in rate including deadhead and their profit, then set your minimum for a new offer.
- Build a month's settlement for an owner-operator: dispatcher and factoring fees, fuel, running costs and what is really left.
- Calculate the fuel surcharge on four loads, once with the formula and once with the contract's step table, and bill the right total.
- Compare six lanes by profit and by profit per day and let INDEX/MATCH pick the winner of each.
- Measure how well each of Ridgeline's three trucks is used: loaded miles %, revenue per mile and revenue per truck per week.
- Find the lowest rate per loaded mile truck 101 can accept, with deadhead and the dispatcher fee, and what it needs to hit a profit target.
- Build next year's P&L for Ridgeline's three trucks with SUMPRODUCT and plan the maintenance reserve for the oldest truck.
About this course
In trucking, profit is won or lost one mile at a time. This course helps you know your numbers before accepting a load. You separate fixed from variable costs to find cost per mile, then judge load profitability including deadhead miles. Dispatcher commission is deducted to reach owner-operator net, and fuel surcharges are calculated by formula and step table. You compare lanes to pick the best load, measure utilisation through loaded-mile share and revenue per truck, and calculate the break-even rate per mile. A final lab builds a P&L for a three-truck fleet with a maintenance reserve. For owner-operators, small fleet owners, dispatchers and logistics students.
