Growth Charts & Percentiles: Z-Scores, LMS Method & BMI-for-Age
Percentiles and z-scores with NORM.S.DIST/NORM.S.INV, the LMS formula behind WHO and CDC growth charts, percentile curves, BMI-for-age, growth velocity, crossing percentile lines, interpolation by age and a cohort summary: 8 graded labs on synthetic children with illustrative tables. What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn height-for-age z-scores of twelve children into percentiles, find the z-scores of the standard percentile lines and compare the share below −2 SD with what a normal distribution expects.
- Calculate weight-for-age z-scores for ten boys from their L, M and S values, turn them into percentiles, handle the L = 0 case and count the children below −2 SD.
- Invert the LMS formula to compute the 3rd, 50th and 97th percentile weights for ages 2–10 and draw them as a growth chart.
- Calculate BMI for ten boys, turn it into a BMI-for-age z-score with LMS, label the weight-status category and count the children at or above the 85th percentile.
- Compute Noah's exact age at each visit, his height velocity in cm per year between visits and the intervals where growth slowed.
- Place each of Mila's visits between the major percentile lines, count how many lines she has crossed since her first visit and flag the visits that need a closer look.
- Interpolate L, M and S linearly for children aged between table rows, compute their z-scores and see how much error the completed-year shortcut adds.
- Summarise a screening cohort the way nutrition surveys do: the share below −2 SD, the observed distribution in z-score bands and the comparison with the reference normal curve in a chart.
About this course
Growth charts are built on a compact statistical method, and this course shows how it works. You convert percentiles to z-scores and back with the standard normal distribution, then apply the LMS formula to turn a measurement into a z-score. Reversing the formula draws percentile curves, and BMI is converted to a BMI-for-age z-score. You calculate growth velocity in centimetres per year between visits, flag children who cross percentile lines, and interpolate L, M and S for ages between table rows. A cohort summary reports the share below minus two standard deviations with a distribution chart. For students in paediatrics, nursing, nutrition and public health, and for developers of growth tools. Educational only, not clinical guidance.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
