What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Convert five practice orders on a fictional training ward into milligrams with a factor table, flag the ones above the maximum per dose and convert patient weights from pounds to kilograms.
  • Calculate tablets and liquid volumes for nine practice orders with D / H × Q, round liquids to a measurable 0.1 mL and flag tablet results that need a second look.
  • Turn mg/kg/day practice orders for five patients into daily and per-dose amounts, compare them with the maximum daily dose and chart the result.
  • Calculate pump rates and gravity drip rates for five practice infusions, convert three pump rates into mg/h and flag a dose rate above its maximum.
  • Calculate how long five practice infusions run, when they finish (one crosses midnight), flag an infusion that would run faster than its minimum duration and work out the volume left at handover.
  • Calculate stock and diluent volumes for five practice preparations, flag the impossible and the unmeasurably small ones and solve one dilution backwards.
  • Turn % w/v strengths into grams and mg/mL, convert "1 in x" ratio strengths into the volume to draw and flag a volume above the maximum.
  • Calculate the body surface area of five practice patients with the Mosteller formula, turn mg/m² orders into doses and flag prescriptions that differ by more than 5% from your calculation.

About this course

Medication maths becomes routine once every step is visible. This course gives nursing and pharmacy students a calculation drill in which each answer is checked automatically. You convert between grams, milligrams and micrograms and from pounds to kilograms, use desired-over-have for tablets and liquids, and work out weight-based doses per kilogram per day, divided doses and a maximum-dose check. IV labs cover millilitres per hour, drops per minute and dose rates, plus infusion time and expected finish time. You dilute solutions with C1V1 = C2V2, handle percentage and ratio strengths, and finish with body surface area by the Mosteller formula and BSA-based doses. All values are training examples for exam practice; always follow your institution's protocols and qualified clinical judgement.
