IoT Battery Life & Power Budgets: Duty Cycles, Sleep Current & Energy Harvesting

Convert mA, µA, mAh and mWh, turn a state table into an average current, estimate battery life with temperature and self-discharge, price every radio message in mJ, chart sampling interval vs life, check peak current against internal resistance, budget a solar harvester and plan fleet battery swaps: 8 graded labs for a fictional sensor node.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Compare five battery options for the fictional Fernleaf FN-200 sensor node in mWh and Wh, convert µA to mA and find how many days each lasts at a constant 25 µA.
  • Turn the FN-200's state table (sleep, sensor, MCU, radio) into the charge per cycle, the average current in µA and the share each state takes from the battery.
  • Estimate the FN-200's battery life in three climates, first ideally (mAh ÷ mA), then realistically with temperature derating, the cut-off voltage and self-discharge.
  • Calculate the charge and energy of one FN-200 message at six radio profiles, the average current it adds at 4 messages per hour, and how many messages per day fit a fixed radio budget.
  • Build the table every product manager asks for: battery life of the FN-200 at sampling intervals from 1 to 120 minutes, find the shortest interval that still reaches 5 years and chart the curve.
  • Check whether five batteries can feed the FN-200's 120 mA radio burst without the voltage collapsing below 2.4 V, at room temperature and in the cold, and find the coin cell's real current limit.
  • Check month by month whether a 30 mW solar cell can run the cellular FN-200 variant, find the winter deficit and size the energy buffer it needs.
  • Plan battery swaps for 1,500 FN-200 nodes at six customer sites: a planned replacement interval with a safety margin, replacements per year, the annual cost and the cost per node per year.

About this course

Will your sensor node run for months or for years? This course gives hardware and firmware engineers a structured way to answer before the device ships. You start with the units: milliamps, microamps, mAh, mWh and battery capacity. A state table turns sleep, wake and transmit phases into a duty-cycled average current, which becomes a lifetime estimate corrected for temperature and self-discharge. You calculate energy per radio message, trade transmission frequency against life and chart how the sampling interval affects runtime. Further labs cover peak current, voltage drop and internal resistance, and a solar harvesting budget that identifies the winter deficit and the buffer needed. The final lab plans battery replacements and costs across a deployed fleet.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
