What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn six fractional drawing dimensions into decimal inches and millimetres, convert metric callouts to inches to four places and find the nearest 1/64 for decimal drill sizes.
  • Turn illustrative surface speeds into spindle RPM for seven inch tools, compare the exact formula with the ×4 shop shortcut, cap the speed at the machine limit and do the same for four metric tools.
  • Turn chip loads into table feeds for six tools, work out how long each cut takes, calculate the metal removal rate of a pocketing pass and back-calculate the chip load of an old program.
  • Turn eight toleranced dimensions into upper and lower limits, grade measured parts PASS or FAIL with IF and AND, and classify a hole-and-shaft fit from its clearances.
  • Calculate the angle, X and Y position of eight holes on a 4.5 in bolt circle for a mill program and check the pattern with a scatter chart.
  • Calculate taper per inch, taper per foot and the included angle for five tapered parts and the tailstock offset for turning one of them between centres.
  • Add the drill point length to five hole depths for the Z values of a program, calculate gauge block stacks for four sine bar angles and check which angle the stack actually built gives.
  • Calculate cut times from feeds for five operations, total the cycle time of one bracket, turn it into machine hours and a price per part for a 250-piece job, and chart where the time goes.

About this course

Good parts start with correct numbers at the machine. This course covers the calculations machinists and CNC programmers use every day. You convert between inches, millimetres and fractions, then derive spindle speed from surface speed and tool diameter in SFM or metres per minute. Feed rates come from RPM, chip load and flute count, along with cut time and metal removal rate. You calculate maximum and minimum sizes for tolerances and fits, place bolt-circle holes with sine and cosine and check them on a scatter plot. Taper labs cover taper per inch and per foot, angles with ATAN and tailstock offset, and you work out drill point depth and sine bar setups. A final lab estimates cycle time and quotes a job.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
