Text Classification by Hand: Naive Bayes Spam Filter & Sentiment

Build a Naive Bayes text classifier cell by cell: priors, word counts with SUMIFS, Laplace smoothing, log-probability scores with SUMPRODUCT, a confusion matrix, precision/recall/F1 at a log-odds threshold, a lexicon-vs-Naive-Bayes sentiment test and the most informative words, in 8 graded labs.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Count the spam and ham messages in a labelled training set, turn the counts into prior probabilities and their natural logs, and read the prior log-odds.
  • Count how often each of the 8 vocabulary words appears in spam and in ham with one SUMIFS formula, total the words per class and spot the zero-count problem.
  • Turn word counts into smoothed likelihoods P(word | class) with add-one (Laplace) smoothing, so no word ever gets a probability of zero.
  • Convert likelihoods to logs, score a new message for both classes with one SUMPRODUCT each, and turn the log-odds back into a spam probability.
  • Score 12 unseen test messages for both classes, predict Spam or Ham, and count true/false positives and negatives into a confusion matrix.
  • Classify 16 messages at two log-odds thresholds, count TP, FP and FN for each, and compare precision, recall and F1 to choose a safer spam threshold.
  • Score 12 product reviews with a hand-made sentiment lexicon and with Naive Bayes log-ratios, and compare the accuracy of both against the true labels.
  • Compute each word's log-likelihood ratio, rank the vocabulary, pick the strongest spam and ham signals with INDEX/MATCH and chart the ranking.

About this course

Naive Bayes is one of the simplest text classifiers and still a strong baseline. In this course you build one entirely in formulas, so every probability is visible. You estimate class priors from message counts, tally word counts per class with SUMIFS and apply Laplace smoothing to get word likelihoods. Messages are scored by summing log-probabilities with SUMPRODUCT, then a whole batch is classified and evaluated with a confusion matrix. You move the decision threshold on the log-odds to trade precision against recall and F1. A sentiment lab compares a simple word lexicon with Naive Bayes, and the final lab ranks the most informative words by log-likelihood ratio. For students, analysts and anyone learning NLP fundamentals.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
