Humanitarian Aid Logistics: Needs Estimates, Relief Kits, Pipeline Planning, Warehouse Stock, Last-Mile Distribution & Cost per Beneficiary

Plan relief supplies with clear numbers. You will turn a fictional needs estimate into kit quantities, plan a supply pipeline with lead times, track warehouse stock and coverage weeks, schedule distributions to sites, measure what reached people and report cost per beneficiary to donors, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn registered people at five fictional sites into households, household kits and shelter kits, add a contingency buffer and find the site with the most households.
  • Build the weight, volume and cost of one invented household kit with SUMPRODUCT and work out how many trucks a shipment of 2,400 kits needs when both weight and volume limit the load.
  • Compute when six fictional purchase orders arrive (working-day lead times plus calendar transport days), measure the days to spare against the needed-by date, count late orders and the kits on hand at the distribution start.
  • Roll the stock of a fictional relief warehouse forward week by week, turn it into weeks of cover, flag the weeks that need a reorder and find the lowest stock point.
  • Plan the last mile from a fictional field hub to five sites: round-trip time, whole trips per truck and day, kits delivered per day, distribution days per site and the truck-days for the whole plan.
  • Check a fictional distribution against the registration lists: coverage per site and pooled, the transit loss between hub and sites, and the kits still waiting in the site stores.
  • Build the full cost of a fictional relief programme from quantities and rates, add support costs, and report cost per household, cost per person and the logistics share.
  • Prepare the financial part of a fictional donor report: remaining budget and spend rate per line, the overall spend rate, a highlight on overspent lines and a budget-vs-actual chart.

About this course

In an emergency response, a spreadsheet often decides whether the right supplies reach the right places in time. This course practises that planning with an entirely fictional scenario. You estimate households per site against an invented kit standard, then build a kit bill of materials with weight, volume, cost and truckloads. Orders and lead times become arrival dates with WORKDAY, revealing gaps before supplies land. A warehouse ledger tracks receipts, dispatches, weeks of cover and shortages. Round trips per day set the distribution plan per site, monitoring compares planned and delivered kits with coverage and transit losses, and costs are summed per household reached. A donor report with budget against actual closes the course. For aid workers, NGO staff and logistics students.
