Camping & Expedition Logistics: Food Rations, Stove Fuel, Water Treatment & Gear Weight

Ration food, fuel and water for a fictional group expedition and share the load fairly between everyone's packs: person-days and calorie bands, lighter food swaps, stove fuel and canisters, treatment supplies from product labels, resupply carries, gear splits by body weight, contingency rations and a pack-weight dashboard, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn the itinerary of a fictional 10-day group trek into person-days, total calories per activity band, the average day and the packed food weight to carry.
  • Measure the energy of one person-day of the menu, swap foods for denser ones at exactly the same kcal and work out how many kilograms the whole group saves.
  • Look up the fuel use per litre for each night's camp conditions, total the trip's fuel with a reserve, round up to whole canisters and work out the weight you really carry.
  • Size the water treatment supplies from fictional product labels – litres to treat, tablet strips, filter cartridges – and work out how much water each person carries across the longest dry stretch.
  • Count the food days each person carries on every morning of the trip with a food cache on day 7, turn them into pack weights, find the heaviest pack and the longest leg that stays within the planning limit.
  • Assign the group gear to six people, compare every pack with a target based on body weight, find the most overloaded person and count how many packs are outside the tolerance.
  • Estimate the share of days lost to weather from eight past seasons, turn it into contingency days, and price the weight and cost of the reserve rations.
  • Bring food, water and fuel together into the average pack weight for every day of the traverse, add the dashboard's check cells and chart the pack weight over the trip.

About this course

On a long trip, every extra kilogram is carried for days, so the planning has to be precise. This course gives expedition leaders a numbers-first approach. You build a group food plan from person-days and calorie bands, then cut total weight by swapping foods for higher calorie density at equal energy. Stove fuel is calculated from grams per litre boiled and translated into canisters, and water treatment supplies are counted in tablets, filter cartridges and carries. Resupply points show carried weight day by day and the maximum load. Group gear is shared fairly as a share of body weight, contingency days add bad-weather rations and an emergency reserve, and a dashboard tracks pack weight across the trip.
